Sliding Paired Bookends

Commissioned bookends: A bat mitzvah gift with a bit of shine. The design was inspired by Joshua Slocum's sloop the Spray. The Spray carried Joshua Slocum safely on his solo circumnavigation of the world in the late 1800s. Metallic sails were polished, hammered, and tempered to reflect the young recipient's image, as he too begins his journey in the study of life. The design incorporated a variety techniques: metal shaping, piercing, and soldering; hand threading screws with hammer set stones; wood shaping, wood bending, and metal plate and wire inlay; and a hand rubbed wood finish to emphasize the tiger stripe maple. Such stripes representing the setting sun. The silver maple leaf was my signature. The final culminating detail: the two halves slide together, forming the sloop, on a pair of brass bars with tight precision.
